Welcome to PROEIB Andes

Our mission is to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the indigenous peoples, through socially relevant and culturally and linguistically pertinent educational models and strategies. To achieve such goals we aim at an intercultural bilingual education of high quality, with direct influence on the different levels and modalities of the Latin American educational systems.

PROEIB Andes operated continuously since early 1996 from its headquarters in Cochabamba, Bolivia; and also through its focal points in Popayan, Cauca, Colombia; Quito, Ecuador; Lima, Peru; Temuco, Chile; and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

By the end of September 2007 PROEIB Andes accomplished almost twelve years of intensive and fruitful practice in the region, under the auspices mainly of the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ), having reached the point of its permanent institutionalization. As of October 1st, two related institutions, although independent from one another, continue with the work started almost twelve years ago:

• PROEIB Andes Foundation, a non-profit private institution of Latin American coverage, which will continue carrying out regional activities aimed at the consolidation of intercultural bilingual education and of all other educational models designed from within, with and for the indigenous peoples of the region, in order to respond to their increasing needs ands demands for more and better educational quality in a context of equally increasing indigenous political participation.
• PROEIB Andes Academic Program, an academic unit of the University of San Simon School of Humanities and Educational Sciences, with the mission of continuing with the regional preparation of indigenous human resources which started in 1996, as well as with the development of research programs and projects in order to give feed-back to the teaching and extension programs offered.
